The use of water as a therapeutic agent (hydrotherapy) has a special importance in the Canary Islands. The archipelago is situated on sea water from the Atlantic which is especially rich in sodium, possesses some of the best thermal waters in the world and, due to its volcanic nature, can boast one of the best mineral-medicinal waters in Spain.
Thalassotherapy is the use of sea water to improve health, and includes not only the practice of bathing in salt water, but also exposure to fresh air and sun radiation. A balanced combination of these three elements favours the detoxification of the body. Along with this process we can also add an improvement in the gastric and intestinal functions, the activation of the circulation of the blood and a reduction in the rhythm of the heart beat.
Moreover, due to its volcanic nature, the Canaries has one of the best mineral-medicinal waters in Spain. It is the most important region in the world in terms of the number of springs and reservoirs per square kilometre. In this context, the archipelago offers all kinds of possibilities for the treatment of health through hydro-pinotherapy (drinking waters) and thermo-mineral-medicinal treatments (crenotherapy).
